The Epidermis is the outer layer of dead skin cells covering the body. The new skin cells start at the stratum basale, the bottom layer of the epidermis. As the skin keeps growing the cells die and move up to the top layer, the stratum corneum. These cells are replaced with keratin. In the epidermis there are special cells called melanocytes. These produced melanin which giver your skin pigment.
